Pope Urban II preaching at the Council of Clermont

In 1095, Pope Urban II presided over the Council of Clermont. To induce the Faithful more efficaciously to take up the cross, he granted the remission of punishment due to sin to all who should join the Crusade for the deliverance of the Holy Land, and should die in Christian sentiments in the expedition. This is the first plenary indulgence we read of in Church history. — Bouvier.
