St. Louis of France: A king’s might lies in the affection of his people

The eldest son of Saint Louis IX, who never succeeded the Crusader-King since he died first, received the following counsel from his father:

“My son, endear yourself to the people of your kingdom; for I prefer that a Scotsman come and govern them well and loyally, than for you to govern them badly.”
