When the physicians of Emperor Rudolf I of Hapsburg informed him that his death was near, he cried out; “Well then, let us set out for Spire;” this being the usual burial-place of the German Emperors. So accompanied by two priests the dying old man cheerfully rode to his sepulcher; as he passed along, the people from the surrounding country hastened to see him once more, for they loved him dearly. He died while on the journey at Germersheim on the 15th of July, 1291.
