In the siege of Girona, in 1711, the Duke of Noailles who was the commanding general, went to inspect a battery of artillery. “Did you hear that music?” he asked the artillery officer, when a cannon ball from the enemy barely missed him.
“Oh I pay no attention to the shots flying in, only those flying out,” the officer replied.
