Surviving or thriving?

According to the Raw Story:

…monarchies are not only surviving, but thriving in the 21st century.

There are 28 sovereigns across 43 countries in the world today…

This equates to 22% of the 193 UN member states…

The number of monarchs expands internationally when we consider local and religious royalty. For example, the Zulu nation… The Pope is in every sense a monarch… The Aga Khan…exercises significant diplomatic influence.

…before we defend or deny monarchy we might first try to explain its continued existence in the global political landscape. What we cannot do, it seems, is simply explain it away.
