Locals protest tourists

July 3, 2014

According to the London Evening Standard:

Residents are protesting over plans to build a visitor centre for the boat that was the centrepiece of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

They are furious at plans to put the Gloriana, a rowbarge, in a Norman Foster-designed dry dock and boathouse in woodland at Orleans Park in Richmond.

The council wants to exhibit the boat in tribute to the Queen and Richmond’s river connections.

Plans include building a visitors centre and a café.

The Friends of Orleans Riverside said it would ruin a tranquil riverside spot with unmanageable numbers of tourists and require the playground to be moved.
