Though Louis XIV lived for years in marital infidelity, having relations with mistresses, he always paid close attention to the preachers whose duty it was to reprimand him and the other members of the Court for their errors.

When some nobles complained to Louis XIV about a sermon of Father Jules Mascaron that had displeased them, the king cut them short: “The preacher fulfilled his duty. It is now up to us to fulfill ours.”
