But while governments, bureaucrats, and agencies debated, disputed, and dragged their feet, one man had pity and took action. The Maharaja of Nawanagar, Digvijaysinhji, took matters into his own hands and, without waiting for British or Indian governmental approval, decided to welcome the Polish children. He invited them to the nominally sovereign Indian princely state he ruled, called Nawanagar.
As Digvijaysinhji reportedly said, ‘If God has sent me these children, it is my duty to care for them.’”
