Today is the 79th birthday of Her Imperial Majesty Empress Michiko of Japan. She was educated at the University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo and later studied at Harvard and Oxford. On the 27th November 1958 she became engaged to Crown Prince Akihito… They were married on the 10th April 1959 with Michiko becoming the first commoner to marry into the Imperial Family. The couple have three children: Crown Prince Naruhito (b. 1960), Prince Akishino (b. 1965) and Nori, formerly Princess Sayako (b. 1969).
She carries out an average of 300 engagements a year and is widely revered in Japan.
